The Book Review Lounge

Meri Kitaab is a term in Hindi which means, 'My book'. Here, I intend to give a precise and personal review of the books that I own with few snapshots. I will not cover its price and available deals on it. If you need additional information on any of these books, feel free to comment or mail me for the same :)

Note: Some changes to pages are still in progress, please bear with discrepancies, if any :)

A to Z of crochet : Country Bumpkin Publications.

Points up: The book is for beginner to advanced level. It begins with information on yarns, hooks and other tools required for crocheting. It also illustrates the very basic techniques from how to hold a yarn to advanced techniques of how to increase and decrease the shape of your crocheted object. There are detailed instructions with picture at every step for many stitches from basic, intermediate to advanced level. It includes hairpin crochet, Irish crochet and Tunisian crochet forms too. Few edgings and other finishing touches are aptly described. There are no patterns as such and this book is not meant for that too. The book contains everything that you need to become an expert Crocheter. And yes, the entire 160 pages come in a spiral bind.

Points down: The information given in the book is not unique and similar ones can be found across free online crochet tutorials.

Rating: 5

My recommendation: I would not recommend you to buy this book if you are comfortable with online tutorials. But it is good to have a hard copy while you want to learn or refresh your crochet skills.

Stitch Sampler : Author: Lucinda Ganderton. Dorling Kindersley Publications.

Points up: The beauty of this book is its Stitch Gallery. You may just wonder how many stitches are there to create a magic of thread on any type of fabric. The stitches with photographic instructions are organized based on family of stitches used for embroidery and needlepoint. Initial sections contain concise yet full information on the fabrics, thread and tools required for stitching. It is a quick practical reference guide, a library of 234 stitches, spanning across four main sections : Line and border stitches, Filling stitches, Openwork stitches and Needlepoint stitches. I feel, the book is more suitable for intermediate to advanced level.

Points down: Although it gives step-by-step instructions on the stitches, yet more details would have been a welcome. Instructions for two stitches are squeezed into one page. Also, all these 160 pages of the book are not spiral bound.

Rating: 4

My recommendation: Buy, only if you do not have any quick reference guide on stitching.

Points up: This book is aimed at all skill levels. The entire information is divided into three parts: Techniques, Motifs & joins, and patterns. The techniques are mainly concerned with few basics and about shaping a particular motif. Additionally, it illustrates various methods of joining and color arrangement of motifs. A total of 101 new motifs are categorized on basis of family rather than shapes as in Edie’s earlier book. The most useful part is the classified motif directory linked to respective instruction pages. The categories are named on the basis of the motif’s structure – Classic granny, lacy links, all clustered, 3-D fun, swirls are some of these. The important aspect of this book is the method of joining same and also different kinds of motifs. It not only covers the outer joins but there are few ideas on how to fill the inner gaps between the joined motifs too. The pattern section is small and I did not find it much interesting. The book has a total of 272 spiral bind pages.

Points down: Improper color combinations used for some of the motifs puts me down and does not do justice to the motif.

Rating: 5

My recommendation: I would recommend you to buy this book. It is a lovely addition to your library and will surely become a frequent reference guide for motifs and joining.
